## How it works

Future price = today's price x (1 + rate)^years. The same rate run backwards gives purchasing power: what an amount will be worth in today's money.

## Worked example

[Netflix](https://www.trackmysubscriptions.com/subscriptions/netflix) Standard is $19.99 a month today. If it rose 5% a year, it would cost $32.56 in 10 years. A $100 monthly subscription bill at 3% inflation becomes $134.39, and $100 saved under the mattress for those 10 years only buys what $74.41 buys today.

Use your own service's history as the rate. If a plan went up twice in five years, that is a better guide than the general inflation rate. The [price increase calculator](https://www.trackmysubscriptions.com/tools/subscription-price-increase-calculator) works that out from the old and new price.

## FAQ

### How do you calculate future cost with inflation?

Multiply today's price by (1 + inflation rate) once for every year. At 3%, that is x 1.344 after 10 years.

### What inflation rate should I use?

Your country's recent average is a reasonable start. For a specific subscription, use how fast its own price has risen.

### What is purchasing power?

What an amount of money can buy. Inflation reduces it: the same note buys less every year.
