# Cost per use calculator

The fairest test of a subscription is what each use really costs. Enter the price, how often you use it, and, if you like, what a single use would cost without it.

## How it works

Cost per use is the monthly price divided by uses per month. Yearly prices are divided by twelve first. Add a pay-per-use price, like a single gym class or a movie rental, and the calculator also gives a verdict and the break-even point: the number of uses a month you need for the subscription to win.

## Worked example

A $49.00 gym membership used six times a month costs $8.17 a visit. If a day pass costs $15.00, the membership wins from 4 visits a month. Used twice a month, each visit costs $24.50 and day passes would be cheaper.

## FAQ

### How do you calculate cost per use?

Divide what you pay each month by the number of times you use it that month.

### What is a good cost per use?

Anything below what you'd pay for a single use without the subscription. That comparison matters more than any fixed number.

### Should I cancel a subscription I rarely use?

If paying per use would be cheaper at your real usage, yes. You can usually rejoin later if that changes.
